History

Peoria Street and buildings

  • The Eisenhower Expressway, formerly the Congress Street Expressway, opened in sections between 1955 and 1960.
  • It's on good authority that the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs building (CUPPA Hall) was formerly a brassiere factory.

Planning

  • The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) begins its Campus Master Plan process in 2008. Two main takeaways are:
    • "This is the key connection space from campus to downtown and to public transit"
    • "Forge a formalized entry landscape focused on the CTA station, connecting the northern neighborhood with a signature gateway to campus"
  • Urban Planning & Policy students conduct a design charrette on November 19, 2008, at Gallery 400 (400 S Peoria Street). Download their report.
  • The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) issues press release seeking input on the Circle Interchange study on August, 16, 2012.
  • IDOT held the first public meeting for the Circle Interchange project on August 30, 2012, at 625 S Ashland Avenue.
  • IDOT asks the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to amend the GO TO 2040 regional plan to include the Circle Interchange project to the plan's fiscally constrained projects list. Without the inclusion, the project cannot be constructed. CMAP seeks public input starting January 11, 2013, and ending February 18, 2013.
  • CMAP Board meets on March 13, 2013 (9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) to consider IDOT's request.
  • CMAP's MPO Policy Committee meets on March 14, 2013 (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) to consider IDOT's request.

Chicago Transit Authority

  • The Halsted station on the Congress branch opens in 1958.
  • After the University of Illinois Circle Campus opens in 1965, station is renamed to "U of I-Halsted".
  • The Peoria Street entrance opens on February 22, 1965, to provide better access to the University.
  • Station is renamed to "UIC-Halsted" in 1993.
  • Station renovation begins in 2000. Peoria Street entrance closed from April 2001 to October 2001.

CTA Ridership

In November 2012, when there are only three UIC holidays, ridership at the Peoria Street entrance was greater than the other two entrances combined.

  • UIC-Halsted, Halsted: 1,942 weekday boardings
  • UIC-Halsted, Peoria: 3,830 weekday boardings
  • UIC-Halsted, Morgan: 1,637 weekday boardings

In January 2013, the spring semester began January 14; ridership was lower than November 2012, but the Peoria Street entrance still saw more boardings than the other two entrances combined.

  • UIC-Halsted, Halsted: 1,500 weekday boardings
  • UIC-Halsted, Peoria: 2,707 weekday boardings
  • UIC-Halsted, Morgan: 1,210 weekday boardings
